Empress Falls is the first main waterfall you come to when you set out on the Valley of the Waters Walk in the Blue Mountains. The tourist / cafe spot at the top of the walk has a great range of images of the waterfalls along the route.

We (my Blue Mountains Course participants) didnt walk all the way as it is a long hard walk and when you throw shooting into it I would say it is a two day job.

This shot is a five image stitch shot at 17mm and cropped 1:1 ratio. Would have loved some more detail in the left shadow but it wasn’t meant to be.

  1. I’m hearing what you’re saying about the lack of detail on the left-side but this is one of my favourites from your collection. Very sharp and nice interest in the foreground giving the image a lot of dimension! My eye is drawn straight to the waterfall which I think is what you want!

  2. Beaut image Matt, Ric’s right, the eye is drawn to the waterfall, the foreground is fantastic! The underexposure on the left just makes it look like you shot it with field camera.
5 images @ 17mm, PT Gui or Photoshop for the stitch, did you have any problems with lens distortion?

  3. Thanks Ric I wish I was able to go higher on the shot, but I guess you cant have everything.

Thanks Matt… I agree sometimes images arnt all about getting all the detail and I too think this looks like a typical film shot and film Dynamic range. I merged these in Photomerge. I had a lot of overlap so the program did use any image edges so the shot it very sharp with no distortion.

  4. Hi Matt,

I agree with above – one of my favourites from your site.

I suspect it is because you have gone for square and unintentionally I am becoming jaded with everyone’s super-wide stitches.

Have to disagree with ‘long hard walk’ tho, hehe, my kids did it when they were nippers 🙂

    Cheers mate…

  5. Hey Barney, mate I forgot to mentioned in my post all the crap I was carrying which included the Fuji GX617, Fotoman 6×24, Canon 70-200mm f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8, 17-40mm f4 lense a 5D Mk II all the crap that goes with it and two steel manfrotto tripods one with panoramic head setup. Phew… almost feel tired thinking about carrying it.

  6. Hey Matt,

Love the photo, you’ve achieved a great sense of depth in it. Any long shutter speed waterfall shot does it for me and this is no exception. Well done, great image!

    Lloyd
